The brief was to prepare a design for the new gardens to be located adjacent to the student theatre.

The University vision was to create a quiet place, a retreat to relax in, for intellectual pursuits and calm activities.

It provides places for groups to mingle and meet which are balanced by places for individuals to find quiet enjoyment. It is intended as a new destination to escape the hustle and bustle of the campus. Spaces can also be used by theatre groups for small performances in an intimate outdoor environment.

Around the gardens are quiet seating areas as well as spaces for outdoor chess, petanque and table tennis.

The theatre entrance is now celebrated with a welcoming Entrance Plaza to give it a defined and more useable space to meet before performances and to spill out at the interval.

The gardens are a great success both during the day and in the evening when the new theatrical lighting creates a new welcoming environment.

<![CDATA[King's School, Macclesfield (King's School, Macclesfield )]]> http://efdss.reachsites.co.uk/front/news/newsId/89

We are working with Pick Everard Architects and Engineers to design a landscape for the new school grounds for King’s School including sports pitches, play areas, concourses and footpaths, study courtyards, native woodlands, meadows and ponds.

This would allow the independent school to move to a new single 70 acre site on the north west edge of Macclesfield offering first-rate facilities for 1,250 pupils.

The landscape proposals for the site intend to create a classical parkland setting to the school. In doing so they will create an environment of a high quality and lasting legacy to benefit the school, its pupils, staff and visitors.

The overall aim of the landscape proposals is to conserve as much of the existing vegetation as possible and to develop a comprehensive planting scheme that will supplement it and enhance the environment of the proposed development, ensuring its integration into the wider setting of the landscape/townscape, whilst keeping to a minimum the need for an intensive maintenance regime.

As part of the consultation process plans and visuals will be displayed at public exhibitions prior to submitting a planning application over the summer.

<![CDATA[Community Planning Event for Leicester's Cultural Quarter(Community Planning Event for Leicester's Cultural Quarter)]]> http://efdss.reachsites.co.uk/front/news/newsId/79

We have recently organised a community planning event for Leicester's Cultural Quarter. It was held over two afternoons in October and was a great success with over 200 people attending. The event was aimed at the local people who live and work in the area as well as visitors to the Cultural Quarter. We wanted to get everyone's opinions on the area; what is great, problems to solve now and ideas for the future.

The event was based around a model of the quarter which allowed those who attended to better understand the physical scale of their neighbourhood and allowed them to stick flags into the places that they had commented on. The model was covered with flags by the end of the event with over 400 comments received covering a range of topics from outdoors spaces, buildings, events and facilities. Some of the ideas were fantastic; a new music hub for young performers, art galleries, street art and the need for specialist shops. Other ideas sought a new park around the church of Saint George, new squares with mixed development to link the Curve and Orton Square to the Phoenix along with the improvement of the roads in the quarter. At a more basic level people highlighted their concerns of anti social behaviour, the degradation of key buildings and lighting.

Working as part of the Cultural Quarter Business Association we are now in earnest talks with the officers and members of Leicester City council to get some of the quick fixes done now and to include the larger more ambitious ideas included in the future plans for the Cultural Quarter.

The new Geological Walk at the British Geological Survey (BGS) head office in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire is part of a recently completed redevelopment of new offices for scientists and support staff including reception and conference facility. The project architects were Pick Everard of Leicester with main contractor Kier Construction.

Munro + Whitten were the lead designers of the prestigious Geology Walk and the ancillary landscape beyond.

The Geological Walk forming the main pedestrian route through the office complex exhibits all of the important stones present within the geological periods of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The geology of the British Isles is very varied and every major geological era and rock formation are represented within a carefully designed series of spaces.

Our brief was to create a distinct landscape that is both practical and functional with an educational role, that celebrates the geology of Britain and can be enjoyed by staff and visitors alike. Planting was a low key component and functions as a frame for geological features.

Our landscape architects were key members of the design team worked closely with the British Geological Survey geologists and principal commercial stone supplier CED Ltd to choose and source the appropriate paving stones, feature rocks, boulders and monoliths within and along the walk.

Over the construction period tonnes of stone arrived on site from across the British Isles from as far north as the Scottish Islands, to the moors of the South West and the hills of the Lake District to be placed and laid on site. Altogether 40 different types of rock were used over the 130 meter long concourse.

During the construction period Munro + Whitten were retained as the Landscape Consultants to oversee the works for the Natural Environment Research Council our client and developed the design with BEA Landscape Design and Frank Shaw Architects who were retained by Kier Construction the Design and Build Contractor.

We have been commissioned to undertake an urban planning exercise for a new neighbourhood in Clowne, Derbyshire.

Our concept is to create a distinct local neighbourhood with links stitching the site, its landscape and built forms into Clowne, with a strong sense of place based on current urban design and landscape principles.

Our proposed soft edge to the development will form the bulk of the open space to the new neighbourhood offering a number of different character and uses areas, such as; parkland, wild flower meadows, open woodlands with LEAP’s and footpaths.

The sustainable drainage scheme will be accommodated within the open space taking form of open grass swales and grassed flood basins. SUDS will also follow the streets with grass swales along road edge.

The aim is to create soft and hard spaces with a unifying character whilst still defining the individuality of location through theming and styling.
