Wandsworth, London

Winners of the international competition to prepare designs for the old 1950's Festival Gardens site and the river edge. The winning masterplan was based on the integration of new elements into the Victorian fabric. This allowed the retention and restoration of the old with the introduction of contemporary park features.

The practice, in close association with the officers at Wandsworth, submitted the proposals to the Millennium Commission and Heritage Lottery Fund Urban Parks Programme.

The rejuvenated landscape included the refurbishment of the hard events arenas, the Thames promenades including new elevated platforms and shelters off lawned gardens, contemporary follies, leisure and pleasure gardens of mixed borders, innovative bedding displays and topiary defined by theatrical hedges. Restoration of the water gardens including pools, cascades and fountains, resurfacing paths and boulevards. Introduction of new shelters, toilets and franchised cafe and restaurant.
